What is it?
As New Jersey's State University, Rutgers University has established an expedited Academic Response Program as an interim measure to academically assist New Jersey residents who are attending colleges and universities in the areas most savagely hit by Hurricane Katrina. The Rutgers Academic Response to Katrina Program will enable these New Jersey residents to attend classes during the fall 2005 semester. This program is specifically intended to provide these students, whose home college or university is likely to remain closed for many weeks due to the Hurricane and its aftermath, an opportunity to attend Rutgers as visiting students. Carefully selected coursework at Rutgers may then be transferred back to a student's home institution. It is expected that students visiting Rutgers during the fall 2005 semester will return to their home institutions for the spring 2006 semester.
What is the process and who do I contact?
Each campus has identified a campus coordinator for this program.

Who is Eligible?
This program is open only to NJ Residents, who are excluded from attending their regular institution because of the Hurricane Katrina devastation. Students must currently be in good standing at their regular institution.
What will I need to prove eligibility?
Any student wishing to take advantage of this opportunity will need to present some reasonable proof that he/she is a New Jersey resident and is in attendance at an institution in the affected region. Students may have difficulty obtaining formal proof of attendance and standing from their home institution. In light of this, Rutgers will accept as proof of enrollment and good standing any of several documents which should be reasonably easy for students to secure, including but not limited to: college term grade report from the most recent spring or Summer Semester, a paid term bill for the fall 2005 semester, a college ID card, or similar documentation.
What will I be required to pay?
Students participating in the program will pay regular in-state tuition for their courses. This will vary based upon the number of credits taken, the school, and whether the student has a full or part-time course load. Students will also be responsible for student fees. The current tuition and fee schedule is available at: http://www.studentabc.rutgers.edu/tuition/tuitionpdf.html.
There are two options for payment for this program. Immediate payment may be made by check or major credit card. In the event that immediate payment would present an undue financial hardship, Rutgers will work out a deferred payment plan.
I've already paid my home institution tuition, what are my options?
We anticipate that students unable to attend the fall semester in the hurricane affected areas will likely obtain a tuition credit or refund from their home institution which can be used to offset the Rutgers University tuition and fee charges.
Students are responsible for contacting their home institutions to properly inform them of their attendance at Rutgers for the fall and take whatever steps are necessary to insure reimbursement from their home college or university. Rutgers cannot guarantee that students will receive refunds from their home institutions and any student attending Rutgers on this visiting basis is solely responsible for clarifying financial credits with their home institution.
Does this mean I am admitted to Rutgers?
No. Residents attending Rutgers through this program are doing so with a special status as "Visiting Students". Students participating in this program are expected to return to their home institution in the spring 2006 semester.
What if I wish to continue at Rutgers?
Students attending Rutgers under this program who wish to continue at Rutgers after the fall 2005 semester must apply for admission and meet the same admission standards required for any transfer student. Admission to Rutgers on a matriculating basis is neither inferred nor guaranteed.
What about transferring my courses back to my home institution?
Students should exercise prudent judgment in which courses they take at Rutgers since Rutgers cannot guarantee that these courses will fit into an individual's required course sequence. While we expect that home institutions will be receptive to requests to transfer back credit from Rutgers, ultimately students are responsible for their course selection and communication with academic advisors at their home institution.
What are the deadlines?
-- How soon can I start?
Rutgers has already activated this program and it is available immediately. Follow the process outlined below to select and register for classes. All of the appropriate University offices are cooperating to make this special expedited program successful for NJ students.
-- How late can I register?
The Rutgers fall semester began on September 1. While a grace period is being provided and a certain amount of administrative and academic flexibility is being exercised, students must register prior to September 15. This will ensure that no more than two weeks of any course will be missed. Any extension beyond this date will only be granted on a case by case basis and with the written permission of the instructor.
What about health services?
All students who pay a student fee have access to the on-campus health centers. See http://health.rutgers.edu for a full listing of health services provided.
